Fall Fashion: Day 5 Kidswear
My kids are desperately in need of fall clothes too so today is my go-to kids top... the Moto Maxx! This pattern has been my most used kids tee pattern ever. I love how it's a slim tee but has the fun shoulder accent. This allows for a pop of color or the ability for smaller cuts of fabric to fit easier.
Day 5: Moto Maxx Kidswear
I was shocked when I realized that I've never made any long sleeved Moto Maxx tops. I've made well over 15 short sleeve versions. Since I knew this pattern fit my kids so well, it was an easy choice to cut and sew for their first fall tops.
Pattern Details
I know I've written about this pattern in the past, especially in my kids capsule sewing blog post. One benefit to the Moto Maxx pattern is that it's a two-in-one pattern which includes both a top and pants in sizes 2T- 14. While the pants can be made with knits or stretch wovens, the top is designed for knits only. This is a unisex pattern that also features a projector file. The pattern is constructed with a shoulder piece, short or long sleeve, optional faux double sleeve, hemmed long sleeve or cuffed long sleeve.
The fabric I used is cotton lycra from Rockerbyedestash. It was a 2 panel set with a coordinate. This is a heavier weight cotton lycra so in the future I may size up since both kids said it was thicker and tighter. I love using panels with this top pattern since the shoulder piece allows for panels to fit easily on the front bodice. This yard panel set included 2 panels and a fat half of coordinate in the Hero Kid print. To conserve fabric, I used cotton lycra from my stash for the back bodice on each top.
Fit
I feel like the fit was great on both tops. The kids said they were a bit tighter than they've been in the past. I believe that's because it's a heavier weight cotton lycra. Based on my kids measurements I made a 5 width and 6 height and a straight 8.
Options
This is the top only of the Moto Maxx pattern. I've used the straight hem, long sleeve options for each kid but one has hemmed sleeves and the other cuffs.
Would I change anything next time?
I haven't tried the faux double layer sleeve yet. I think I'd give that option a try next time. I also think I'd add 1/2" to each sleeve length for extra growing time.
