Sinclair Patterns did it once again with the Dakota, an extremely flattering babydoll inspired tunic and dress pattern. This pattern is loaded with options. The fitted bodice can be made plain like I chose or with a button down placket. This would have been my ideal top if I was still nursing as access would be so great. In addition to the bodice styles, there are either crew or scoop necklines as well. I chose the scoop as I feel it's more flattering for my body shape. One benefit of the scoop with this pattern is it's not too low. For those that have a larger cup size and are concerned about fit, there is an additional cut line to ensure the bodice length sits in the correct spot.
My version is the tunic length which has enough coverage that I could wear it with leggings. If you are looking for a longer look, there is a dress length option as well. Both the tunic and dress lengths feature a gathered skirt, option for inseam pockets and higher side seams. In addition to that, there are cap, short, 3/4 or long sleeves.
For fabric, this pattern does ideal in a high stretch fabric. I used DBP that I had received from a mystery box and really loved the fit. Other testers used rayon spandex, bamboo and cotton lycra. If you are wanting to use a fabric that has less stretch such as a french terry or sweater knit, I'd recommend sizing up.
I did grade with this pattern, as I do with most every other pattern. I measured a size 6 for bust and 8 for waist. Since the waist is higher, I might have been able to get away with the straight size 6 but by grading out to an 8 I was able to keep the volume from the gathers.
Overall this was a simple sew. My challenges came with gathering the skirt and getting it to attach evenly to the bodice. Since the pattern test, the tutorial had several ways to gather added for ease. I've made several of the Patterns for Pirates Boho Babydoll tops that are similar in look but found the Dakota a far better fit. I'm already planning some sleeve hacks with a dress version when I can get through a bit more of my Christmas sewing.
The Sinclair Dakota is on sale for $8.99 through December 15, 2018.
